Tim Welting acquired his PhD in Biochemistry in 2007 and is a Professor of Molecular Cartilage Biology at Maastricht University and Maastricht University Medical Center since 2020. He is head of the Laboratory for Experimental Orthopedics, Chairs of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Maastricht University and Leads the Molecular Cartilage Biology group. His laboratory is studying the changing molecular biology of chondrocytes, cartilage and the joint in osteoarthritis. The fundamental molecular insights that his lab acquires are the basis for developing disease-modifying molecular interventions for the treatment of osteoarthritis. In this endeavor his lab is active in drug discovery projects that involve the screening of repurposing drug libraries. Patient stratification is key in developing a disease-modifying treatment for osteoarthritis, therefore his research combines identification of potential drugs with strategies for differential molecular diagnostics for osteoarthritis.
