WHAT IS REMEDi4ALL?

REMEDi4ALL is a European-funded project building a sustainable platform to enhance the repurposing of medicines – finding new uses for existing medicines.

The REMEDi4ALL project is made up of 26 international organisations working together to create a European platform for drug repurposing, bringing together important groups required to drive forward repurposing of medicines including patients, scientists, regulators, policy-makers and funders.

Our mission is to make it easier and more reliable to find new medical uses for already-existing drugs. We also aim to show that many repurposed medicines can be taken into clinic faster and at the fraction of the cost of developing a completely new drug from scratch.

WHAT IS DRUG REPURPOSING?

Imagine if a medicine developed for one disease could be used for another disease

This is drug repurposing: using pre-existing medicines in new ways. This approach has the potential to revolutionise treatment for both rare and common diseases. Why?

  • These medicines are already known to be safe and effective
  • This reduces the time it takes to get treatments to patients
  • This lowers the cost of developing new drugs from scratch
  • This could benefit people with limited or no treatment options

WHY PATIENTS ARE AT THE CENTRE

Patients First: At REMEDi4ALL we’re putting patients at the heart of research. We champion the idea that the best treatments are those made by and with the people who use them – not just for them.

We aim to ensure the patient voice is heard in:

  • Disease prioritisation
  • Drug target prioritisation
  • Designing research and clinical trials
  • Ethical and data decisions
  • Clear, accessible communication of results

WHAT IS REMEDi4ALL DOING?

Patient-Driven Initiatives: Patients are the driving force behind all our drug repurposing initiatives. They bring unique insights and lived experience to the heart of research.
Patient Champions: We involve patients at every stage by partnering with a dedicated patient champion – someone with first-hand experience of the disease. Together, they work with researchers in the drug development team to find innovative solutions.
Demonstrator Projects: REMEDi4ALL supports four real-world projects on infectious diseases, rare cancers, and rare/ultra rare diseases to test the REMEDi4ALL platform with patient involvement and co-creation. Discover more about our demonstrator projects here.
Empowering Activities: Collaboratively, we create patient advocacy groups and engagement plans. Tailored activities, such as buddy systems for clinical trials, focus groups for product design, multi-stakeholder meetings and bootcamps unite researchers and patients.
Dedicated Training: The REMEDi4ALL Digital Academy is an accessible online learning hub which describes the entire drug repurposing pathway. Whether you are new to drug repurposing or looking to develop your knowledge in a specific aspect of drug repurposing, you can find easy-to-understand resources here.

Patients are the driving force behind any repurposing project

If you are a patient representative looking to champion a new repurposing programme, we would like to talk to you. You can contact us here.

Patients are at the centre of our annual conference, iDR

We value patient insights at the international drug repurposing conference, a space to drive forward progress in drug repurposing. If you are interested in sharing your experience at the next edition of #iDR, contact us here.

Patients are involved in key training and capacity building activities

We have developed on-demand and in-person training opportunities for patients and patient group representatives. Discover all our training opportunities here.
