Pre-Conference Workshops

To kick off the iDR25 conference series, two exclusive pre-conference workshops will be held on 6th May 2025 at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The workshops are primarily aimed at academics, early career researchers and patient representatives looking to increase the understanding of key topics related to medicines repurposing and gain practical skills to apply to current and future drug repurposing projects.

Note: this event is separate to the conference itself and is not included in the ticket price for #iDR25.

Pre-Conference Funders Network Event

In an exclusive pre-conference meeting, members and observers of the REMEDi4ALL Funders Network will come together to share best practices and discuss important topics. Find more information about the event and how to register here.

AI

AI in Drug Repurposing

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been gradually increasing its visibility and impact on society at large in the last few years. The potential of this technology is unquestionable, as are the ethical challenges its use can present.

In the field of repurposing, AI in-particular has seen extensive use in the identification of new repurposing opportunities, and the assessment of drug effects.

This track will explore the many different ways that AI is supporting the repurposing journey, its potential to further unlock the innovative use of existing medicines, and the challenges in the ethical and effective deployment of these rapidly advancing technologies in the highly sensitive world of health data.

Repurposing for the under-served

Transforming treatments for rare diseases, cancer, paediatrics and infectious conditions

How drug repurposing solves challenges in under-served populations

This session will delve into the challenges of traditional drug development for under-served populations and showcase how drug repurposing addresses these issues and can deliver significant benefits to these communities. Case studies will highlight its impact across rare diseases, rare cancers, paediatrics, and infectious conditions.

Pathways

Pathways to Patient Access

What happens after the research is done? How do you move from completed and successful clinical studies to actual patient access to impactful treatments?

In this session we will use real-life examples and initiatives to learn how to transition from research to patient access and identify key stakeholders for effective partnerships.

Collaboration in action

Collaboration as key to success for under-served populations

This session will highlight the vital role of collaboration in advancing repurposing efforts for under-served populations. It will showcase collaboration across sectors and borders, emphasising the importance of patient input. The session should acknowledge challenges and barriers, reflecting the opportunities and key learnings from collaborative projects.

Trials

How can innovative trial designs drive reurposing efforts?

Novel and Innovative Trial Designs in Practice

In repurposing studies focused on underserved populations, innovative clinical trial designs are crucial for improving the likelihood of success. Small population sizes, limited knowledge of disease progression, and poorly defined endpoints can easily undermine studies, where the cost of failure is significant. By developing adaptive trials that evaluate multiple drugs simultaneously (platform trials), targeting common disease mechanisms (basket trials), or employing unique statistical approaches tailored to small populations, we can enhance efficiencies in the repurposing process and deliver greater patient impact. These sessions will explore the potential of these new trial approaches and their effect on the drug repurposing landscape.

Repurposing for the under-served

Unlocking opportunities

What incentives and support infrastructure exists to drive repurposing projects forward for under-served populations?

This session should explore the support that is available in the repurposing ecosystem that can help to drive rare repurposing projects to deliver patient impact. We will explore existing policy and regulatory incentives designed to support the repurposing agenda for areas of high unmet need, as well as the different projects that existing globally to support the translation of rare projects.
